Blood banking has evolved from the traditional system of collection, storage and supply of blood to a sophisticated system of voluntary blood donation, blood component separation, infectious disease testing, appropriate storage and supply of the right component to the right patient at the right time. NMCH &RC Blood Bank has been catering to every aspect of this system meticulously since its inception on 14th July 2003. Beginning with processing of Whole Human Blood, the Blood Bank obtained license for manufacture of blood components Packed RBCs, Fresh Frozen Plasma and Platelet Concentrates, in March 2012.
Navodaya medical college hospital and research centre (NMCH & RC) blood bank has a major credit (2016) by introducing the latest equipment – “Apheresis” which is essential to prepare special blood components like Single Donor Platelets and Plasma, pioneering this domain in Raichur district and major parts of North Karnataka region.
Apheresis is a medical procedure that involves removing whole blood from a donor or patient and separating the blood into individual components so that one particular component can be removed. The remaining blood components then are re-introduced back into the bloodstream of the patient or donor.
Apheresis is used for the collection of donor blood components (such as platelets or plasma) as well as for the treatment for certain emergency medical conditions.
The blood bank caters to not only the needs of the hospital but also to the local hospitals in Raichur. Blood donation camps within the hospital premises are being organized from time to time with complete participation from students of various institutions affiliated to NET. Biannual participation in the EQAS program organized by VIMS, Bellary is being done to maintain the highest standards of quality for optimal functioning of Blood Bank. Highly trained and experienced technical staff under the supervision of a competent medical officer ensure that complete aseptic conditions, closed blood collection and processing system is maintained with highest regard to quality so that safe blood is made available to the needy patients.
